About Jaw Myotherapy:

TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT DYSFUNCTION / DISORDER (TMJ & TMD)

Jaw pain is a common complaint which is sought for treatment. In most cases jaw pain presents chronically but can also be acute in nature.

Some people live with jaw pain for years before it becomes painful enough to seek help, while others contract the problem suddenly — usually by some trauma or blow to the head, face and/or neck region.

Common symptoms:

  • Locking or clicking of the jaw, making it difficult to open or close your mouth.

  • Pain or tenderness of your jaw.

  • Pain in one or both of the temporomandibular joints.

  • Aching pain in and around your ear.

  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus).

  • Difficulty chewing or pain while chewing.

  • Aching facial pain.

Diagnosis:

The diagnosis of TMJ disorders is often difficult due to the variety of

different causes including:

  • Physical trauma to the jaw from outside sources

  • Grinding and clenching of the teeth

  • Misaligned cartilage disc in the jaw

  • Emotional or physical stress

  • Anatomical deformities of the teeth and jaw

  • Jaw arthritis - Cartilage damage from arthritis

  • Side effects of recent dental work.

Treatment:

The approach to treatment of TMJ pain will depend on consideration of a range of factors which may contribute to TMJ pain. These may include: Mechanical: requiring dental correction, orthodontic, orthopaedic or neural intervention

What will happen if left untreated?

  • Pain Escalation: Due to the stress and grinding of the jaw joint area, patients can experience varying levels of pain. Without treatment, TMJ can worsen the pain, leading to excruciating levels that may require medical intervention.

  • Deteriorating Oral Health: TMJ can result is troubling oral health problems like gum disease, tooth decay, or physical tooth trauma. Please refer to your dentist.

  • Permanently Damaged Jaw Joints: In the end, refusing to treat your TMJ could lead to permanent lockjaw, or inability to open or close your jaw. These occurrences will require an emergency visit to force open the jaws.

  • Deterioration of Hearing: While rare, patients may experience difficulty hearing, known as tinnitus, due to the close proximity of the grinding jaw joints and muscles to the ears.
